I don't like to use the word spirit because it conjures up unseen and undefined mystical energy. If you can't define the word through pure logic then it should not be used. Meditation or listening is the way to seek God. Meditation is perfected when we still our thoughts and become adept at hearing those who talk to us- or, those who guide us. To answer your question, listening is the only way to hear those charged with guiding us. Often this is as close to hearing God that we will get, at least for a long time. God can speak to us directly and often does but she doesn't speak to those who can't understand her. So, she either directly or indirectly uses our guides.
